Hexagram 57: The Gentle
Hexagram 57: The Gentle
By: James Byrd
I. The Oracle
A. Name and Structure
Hexagram 57 is called Xun, or Ground. Alternate interpretations include The Gentle, The Penetrating Wind, and Calculations. Both the lower and upper trigrams are identical, representing Xun: ground or wind.
B. The Judgment
- The Gentle. Success comes through what is small.
It furthers one to have somewhere to go. - It furthers one to see the great man.
C. The Image
- Winds follow one another:
The image of The Firm penetrating the middle;
What is willed is fulfilled. - Thus, the superior man
Spreads his commands abroad
And carries out the will of Heaven.
II. My Interpretation
A. "The Gentle"
Hexagram 57 reflects a person in doubt about when to seize the opportunity to move forward. This hesitation often arises from internal limitations or outdated beliefs imposed upon themselves.
A spiritual or emotional cleansing is needed to dispel these lingering doubts. My personal method involves meditating on the sacred syllable "AUM," which not only cleanses but also resolves inner conflicts and fears. As the ancient wisdom suggests: "Let a man meditate on Om" (Source).
Through this practice, one can overcome hesitation and move forward with clarity and confidence.
B. Avoiding Past Pitfalls
Even as we progress, it is crucial not to be swayed by rationalizations that downplay previous missteps. Behaviors or thoughts that were harmful in the past will remain detrimental if allowed to resurface. For instance, from my own reflections, I am mindful of:
- Resisting the desire to drink alcohol.
- Avoiding the consumption of meat (except fish).
- Steering clear of sweets and sugary indulgences.
- Exercising caution in my associations.
These small, seemingly inconsequential choices can collectively derail one's progress. Vigilance is required to prevent past tendencies from re-emerging.
C. Staying the Course
To embody The Gentle, one must recognize what is right and wrong and commit to a corrected course of action. This consistency, even in the smallest matters, sustains growth and aligns us with the will of Heaven.
Ritsema/Karcher on Hexagram 57
"Ground, the small: Growing. Harvesting: possessing directed going. Harvesting: visualizing great people."
This hexagram emphasizes subtle penetration and nourishment from below, symbolizing the importance of building support and acting with humility. By harmonizing with the time, one can act effectively by entering situations from the foundation upward.

III. Reflection: "We See Not What They Do – The Gentle"
Hexagram 57 serves as a reminder to approach life with patience, humility, and clarity. Its lessons encourage us to address the roots of our doubts, remain vigilant against past errors, and stay aligned with our higher purpose. True success comes not from grand gestures but from the steady, deliberate actions that align us with the greater flow of life.
