Hexagram 52 – Keeping Still
Hexagram 52 – Keeping Still (Gen): The Art of Inner Calm
By James Byrd, MBA | MediaEclat
The Oracle
In the ancient I Ching, Hexagram 52 is known as Gen, or Keeping Still. It represents the Mountain, a symbol of steadfastness and inner quiet. Both its lower and upper trigrams are mountains—solid, still, and unmoving.
The Judgment reminds us:
“Keeping Still—keeping his back still so that he no longer feels his body.
He goes into his courtyard and does not see his people. No blame.”
This imagery points to the practice of turning inward—ceasing external action and cultivating peace within.
The Image tells us:
“Mountains standing close together—this is the image of Keeping Still.
Thus, the superior man does not permit his thoughts to go beyond his situation.”
It is a call to mindfulness and the discipline of remaining present, even as the world shifts around us.
My Interpretation – The Power of Meditation
After reviewing this hexagram, one clear principle emerges: meditation.
It is a time to embrace quietude and Zen, allowing the mind and body to become still. Just as a lotus flower floats serenely on calm waters, our outer composure must arise from an inner source of peace.
When we nurture tranquility within, we project harmony outward—as above, so below. Keeping our inner foundation strong makes us steady as a mountain, regardless of external storms.
Practicing Stillness
To practice Keeping Still, begin with the body.
Still the toes. Then the legs. Then the breath.
As your physical motion quiets, allow your thoughts to slow as well.
Avoid harboring resentment or negative energy toward others—what we hold inside eventually manifests outwardly. Instead, focus on releasing judgment and finding calm through breath, silence, and awareness.
The goal is to reach “No Mind”—a state of full absorption in the moment, known in Zen as Mu or Samadhi.
“Let a man meditate on Om.”
