Hexagram 15 – Humility (Modesty)
Hexagram 15 – Humility (Modesty)
By: James Byrd
I. The Oracle
A. Hexagram Fifteen is called Qián, or Humility. Another interpretation is Modesty. Its lower trigram is Gen (Mountain), and its upper trigram is Kun (Earth).
B. The Judgment
Modesty creates success.
The superior man carries things through.
C. The Image
Within the earth, a mountain:
The image of Modesty.
Thus, the superior man reduces that which is too much,
And augments that which is too little.
He weighs things and makes them equal.
II. My Interpretation – “Humility”
Hexagram 15 is about incremental progress through humility. It teaches that success does not always come from force, brilliance, or visibility — but from balance, fairness, and quiet correction.
In business and leadership, humility means:
Listening before speaking
Serving before demanding
Adjusting before insisting
Correcting excess and strengthening weakness
The old phrase “the customer is always right” is not about surrender — it is about strategic humility. When used correctly, humility builds loyalty, trust, and long-term success.
This hexagram advises moving away from immodesty and toward modesty because the time calls for it. When the time calls for humility, boldness becomes noise, and pride becomes a barrier.
It also warns against daydreaming disguised as planning. Overthinking imaginary problems can interfere with steady progress. Modesty keeps a project grounded. It keeps expectations realistic and progress steady.
The superior person:
Reduces excess
Strengthens what is weak
Creates balance
Maintains a level playing field
Allows growth at all levels
This is not weakness.
This is controlled strength.
Humility is a state of becoming — a process where a person improves quietly, consistently, and correctly. From low to high, step by step, the modest person rises — not by force, but by alignment with what is right and necessary.
Be modest.
Balance the scales.
Swim with the flow of things — for now.
Leadership & Business Insight
Hexagram 15 is often considered one of the most favorable hexagrams in the I Ching because humility attracts support. People help the modest leader. People trust the fair manager. People stay with the balanced organization.
Pride isolates.
Humility attracts.
When this hexagram appears, the advice is simple:
Do not try to look important.
Be useful instead.
That is the road to success in Hexagram 15.
Psalm 50:23 says, “Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; and to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God.”
This ancient verse teaches a simple but powerful principle: gratitude and right conduct lead to clarity and success.
This idea is echoed in Hexagram 15 of the I Ching — Humility. The message is that modesty, discipline, and proper order create progress and good fortune. Not arrogance. Not force. Order.
In leadership and in life, the formula is timeless:
Gratitude → Humility → Discipline → Success.
Many people look for complicated answers, but the old wisdom traditions repeat the same truth:
Be thankful.
Stay humble.
Keep your life in order.
Then progress comes naturally.
Psalm 50:23 and Hexagram 15 both teach that success is not something you chase — it is something you prepare for through the way you live.
