I. The Oracle

A. Overview
Hexagram 13 is Tong Ren, or Fellowship with Men. Other interpretations include Concording People and Gathering Men. The lower trigram is Li (Fire), representing clarity and radiance, and the upper trigram is Qian (Heaven), representing strength and creative force. Together, they symbolize clarity under heaven — truth that is visible to all and fellowship formed in the open.

B. The Judgment

1. Fellowship with men in the open. Success.

2. It furthers one to cross the great water.

3. The perseverance of the superior man furthers.

This hexagram teaches that success comes through cooperation with others, especially beyond one's immediate circle. Crossing the great water symbolizes undertaking an important mission or major transition, which is made possible through unity and shared purpose.

C. The Image

1. Heaven together with fire: The image of Fellowship with Men.

2. Thus the superior man organizes the clans and makes distinctions between things.

The superior man brings order and clarity to groups of people, uniting them under a common cause while maintaining wisdom about differences in roles and responsibilities.

II. Interpretation – Fellowship

With this hexagram, we see a person who joins in fellowship with others who may not be exactly like him. He does so because they are nearby, because society requires cooperation, and because growth requires interaction beyond one's immediate circle.

If a person limits relationships only to close family or familiar people, their understanding of the world becomes narrow. This idea is similar to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, where people mistake shadows for reality because they never leave the cave to see the real world. Fellowship expands awareness. It exposes us to new ideas, new cultures, and new ways of thinking.

The superior man understands this. He does not isolate himself. He participates in society and works to improve it. He first helps the people nearby, then extends his influence outward. Fellowship begins locally but must not remain local.

To know more, one must extend their range of knowledge and awareness of current issues and the world beyond their immediate environment. True fellowship is not based on sameness, but on shared purpose.

This hexagram is ultimately a call for universal brotherhood despite differences.
To serve is to serve. Service should always be extended for the betterment of all, bringing many people together as one.

Hexagram 13 teaches teamwork, partnerships, networking, and alliances. Success often comes not from working alone, but from working with the right people toward a shared mission.
