Hexagram 31 — Influence (Xian)
By James Byrd
I. The Oracle
A. Understanding Hexagram 31
Hexagram thirty-one is Xian, often translated as Influence, Wooing, Attraction, or Conjoining. This hexagram is formed by the lower trigram Gen (Mountain) and the upper trigram Dui (Lake). The image suggests a lake resting on a mountain, symbolizing gentle influence, attraction, and mutual responsiveness.
The Judgment
Influence. Success.
Perseverance furthers. To take a maiden to wife brings good fortune.
This speaks to the power of gentle influence rather than force. True influence comes from sincerity, humility, and consistency. The reference to marriage symbolizes union, partnership, and mutual attraction, not domination.
B. The Image
A lake on the mountain: The image of influence.
Thus the superior man encourages people to approach him by his readiness to receive them.
This teaches that openness and receptivity create influence. People are not persuaded by pressure; they are persuaded by sincerity and emotional truth.
II. Interpretation — “Conjoining”
Your interpretation emphasizes something very important: influence begins internally before it appears externally.
Influence is not manipulation. Influence is alignment.
When a person truly understands the process — sincerity, truth, and goodness — influence becomes natural and not forced. People can sense intention, even when it is not spoken. Thoughts shape tone, body language, timing, and decision-making. In this way, influence begins in the mind and the heart before the meeting ever takes place.
To think well of others before meeting them is a powerful discipline. It removes fear, reduces defensive thinking, and allows a person to enter a situation calm, prepared, and sincere. This creates the conditions for a successful union — whether in business, friendship, partnership, or leadership.
Hexagram 31 teaches that:
Influence comes from emotional honesty.
Attraction comes from sincerity.
Union comes from mutual respect.
Lasting relationships come from correct intentions at the beginning.
So the lesson of Conjoining is this:
First correct the mind.
Then prepare the attitude.
Then make the approach.
If the response is sincere, the union will last.
Influence is not about pushing forward.
It is about creating a condition where coming together becomes natural.
Closing Thought
Hexagram 31 is often about relationships, partnerships, attraction, leadership, and persuasion. But the root of all influence is character. When the inner condition is correct, the outer relationships form naturally and endure.
You projected the good thought — now make the approach.
