Hexagram 23 | Splitting Apart

Hexagram 23 — Splitting Apart

I. The Oracle

A. Hexagram Explanation

Hexagram twenty-three is called Bo, or Splitting Apart. Other variations include Peeling Away, Stripping Away, and Falling Apart. The lower trigram is Kun: earth. The upper trigram is Gen: mountain.

The image is that of a mountain resting upon the earth. When the foundation weakens, the mountain eventually crumbles. This hexagram speaks of decay, erosion, and the gradual breakdown of structures that are no longer firmly supported.

B. The Judgment

  1. Splitting Apart.
    It does not further one
    To go anywhere.

  2. The superior man preserves himself
    Through stillness and caution.

This is not a favorable time for aggressive action, major expansion, or risky ventures. Instead, it is a period for observation, inner strengthening, and preserving what remains stable.

C. The Image

  1. The mountain rests upon the earth:
    The image of Splitting Apart.

  2. Thus those above can ensure their position
Only by giving generously to those below.

The message here is profound: foundations matter. Leadership, relationships, businesses, and even personal health depend on support systems beneath them. When those systems are ignored or weakened, collapse slowly begins.

II. Another Interpretation

A. “Splitting Apart”

This hexagram reflects a time when something hidden beneath the surface is beginning to reveal itself. Weaknesses once ignored now become visible. Structures that appeared stable may slowly lose integrity.

In leadership, this may represent:

  • declining morale,

  • weakening loyalty,

  • financial instability,

  • poor communication,

  • or the erosion of discipline.

Personally, it can symbolize:

  • emotional exhaustion,

  • spiritual fatigue,

  • declining health,

  • or the need to strip away unhealthy attachments.

The key lesson is not panic — it is awareness.

Sometimes life removes old structures so stronger foundations may later emerge. During this phase, one should avoid forcing outcomes or attempting grand movements. Small corrections and inner stability are favored.

Like a mountain weathered by time, pressure accumulates slowly before visible change occurs.

III. Leadership and Organizational Insight

Hexagram 23 is highly relevant in organizational behavior and strategic management.

Leaders should:

  • strengthen foundational relationships,

  • listen carefully to employee concerns,

  • preserve resources,

  • reduce unnecessary conflict,

  • and avoid overextension.

When organizations ignore foundational cracks, collapse often begins quietly before becoming obvious.

This hexagram warns against arrogance during unstable periods. It favors:

  • humility,

  • simplification,

  • restructuring,

  • and rebuilding trust.

In difficult periods, wise leaders conserve energy while preparing for renewal.

IV. Wellness and Personal Reflection

On a personal level, Hexagram 23 can symbolize the importance of:

Sometimes growth begins only after old habits, unhealthy environments, or exhausting routines are stripped away.

This is not necessarily defeat.
It may instead be preparation for transformation.

V. Strategic Reflection Questions

  • What foundations in my life need strengthening?

  • Am I ignoring small warning signs?

  • What habits or attachments should be removed?

  • Where should I conserve energy instead of forcing progress?

  • What can be rebuilt stronger after this period passes?

VI. Modern Interpretation

In today’s world, Hexagram 23 may apply to:

  • unstable markets,

  • declining institutions,

  • organizational restructuring,

  • burnout culture,

  • environmental stress,

  • aging infrastructure,

  • or personal exhaustion from constant stimulation.

The solution is not reckless expansion.
The solution is strategic preservation and preparation.

VII. Closing Thought

Hexagram 23 reminds us that all things move in cycles.
Periods of decline are not permanent.

Sometimes life peels away the unnecessary so that what is essential may remain.

Like winter before spring, stillness and patience prepare the way for renewal.
