Gospel of Luke 4:21 — What is the meaning?
Luke 4:21 says:
“This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” (KJV)
Jesus spoke these words after reading from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue. The passage described:
preaching good news to the poor,
healing the brokenhearted,
delivering captives,
restoring sight,
proclaiming God’s favor.
Meaning of the verse
Jesus was declaring that:
He Himself was the fulfillment of the prophecy.
The long-awaited Messiah had arrived.
God’s Kingdom was now being revealed through Him.
This moment was powerful because Jesus publicly identified Himself as the Anointed One foretold in Scripture.
Why it mattered
Many expected a political deliverer, but Jesus revealed a deeper mission:
salvation,
healing,
freedom from sin.
The statement also challenged the listeners because they knew Him as the carpenter’s son from Nazareth. Some were amazed, while others rejected Him.
Does the Bible say children will turn against parents?
Yes. Jesus warned that divisions would sometimes occur because of faith and spiritual conflict.
One example appears in Gospel of Matthew 10:21:
“And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents…”
Another related passage is in Gospel of Luke 12:53.
Meaning
Jesus was not encouraging family division. Instead, He warned that:
loyalty to truth can create conflict,
faith in Christ may divide households,
some people reject or oppose believers, even within families.
The Bible still strongly teaches:
honoring parents,
loving family,
seeking peace where possible.
The warning is about the reality of spiritual division in a fallen world.
What’s the difference between “called” and “chosen”?
This idea is often connected to Gospel of Matthew 22:14:
“Many are called, but few are chosen.”
Called
“Called” refers to:
the invitation of God,
hearing the message,
being invited toward repentance and salvation.
This call can go out broadly to many people.
Chosen
“Chosen” refers to:
those who truly respond in faith,
those who remain faithful,
those aligned with God’s will.
A simple way to view it:
The call is the invitation.
The chosen are those who genuinely accept and walk in it.
Different Christian traditions explain this differently:
some emphasize God’s sovereignty,
others emphasize human response and obedience.
But both agree the call of God should not be ignored.
How do we know we passed from death to life?
This comes from First Epistle of John 3:14:
“We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren.”
Meaning
“Death” here refers primarily to spiritual separation from God.
“Life” refers to spiritual rebirth and eternal life through Christ.
John gives evidence of this transformation:
love for others,
compassion,
obedience to God,
walking in truth,
rejection of hatred.
Signs of spiritual life
The New Testament often points to:
love replacing bitterness,
conviction replacing indifference,
desire for righteousness,
growth in faith,
It does not mean perfection. Rather, it points to a changed direction of heart and life.
The passage teaches that genuine faith produces visible fruit through love, mercy, and spiritual growth.
