Hexagram 42: Augmenting

I. The Oracle

A. Hexagram 42 is Yi, or Augmenting.

• Another variation is Increase.

• Its lower trigram is Zhen: shake or thunder, and its upper trigram is Xun: ground or wind.

B. The Judgment

1. Increase. It furthers one to undertake something, particularly endeavors that align with personal growth, community betterment, or long-term goals. These might include starting a new project, fostering meaningful relationships, or taking decisive steps toward resolving challenges.

2. It furthers one to cross the great water.

C. The Image

1. Wind and thunder: the image of increase.

   • a) Thus the superior man: if he sees good, he imitates it.

   • b) If he has faults, he rids himself of them.

II. Another Interpretation

A. "Increase"

It is okay to carry out large plans at the moment, such as launching a significant initiative or making a life-changing decision, but one cannot treat all promptings that way. Show gratitude for rewards received and use that gratitude to reach out and respond to the cry for help from others, such as offering financial support to someone in crisis, volunteering time to assist a community project, or providing emotional support to a friend in need. That is the truth that mends everlasting friendships. Increase resources by swiftly coming to the aid of others in times of need; it builds trust on the other end of the problem.
