God's Minute | Hebrews 10:22
Epistle to the Hebrews — Hebrews 10:22 says:
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”
This verse is about approaching God sincerely and confidently through faith. The writer emphasizes four ideas:
“Draw near” — Come close to God in prayer, worship, and trust.
“True heart” — Be genuine, not pretending spiritually.
“Full assurance of faith” — Have confidence in God’s promises through Christ.
“Hearts sprinkled… bodies washed” — Symbolic language pointing to inner cleansing from guilt and outward commitment to a holy life.
The passage reflects themes from Old Testament priestly cleansing, but now applied spiritually through Christ’s sacrifice.
Called vs. Chosen
In the Bible, many are called, but fewer are described as chosen.
“Called”
To be called means:
invited,
summoned,
or given an opportunity by God.
Example:
God calls people through truth, conscience, preaching, conviction, or life events.
“Chosen”
Chosen refers to:
those who respond faithfully,
remain committed,
and align themselves with God’s purpose.
A common reference is from Gospel of Matthew 22:14:
“Many are called, but few are chosen.”
The distinction often points to response and perseverance. The invitation may go broadly, but the chosen are those who truly walk in it.
Does God know you before you are born?
Yes — several scriptures express this idea.
One well-known verse is from Book of Jeremiah 1:5:
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee…”
This suggests:
God’s awareness of a person precedes birth,
human life has meaning and purpose,
and individuals may carry unique callings.
Another example is Book of Psalms Psalm 139, which describes God knowing a person’s thoughts, formation, and days.
Theologically, this is often connected to:
purpose,
and spiritual identity.
What does it mean to “cast down imaginations”?
This comes from Second Epistle to the Corinthians 10:5:
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God…”
“Imaginations” here refers to:
destructive reasoning,
prideful arguments,
false beliefs,
fears,
or thought patterns opposed to truth.
To “cast them down” means:
reject thoughts that lead away from truth,
discipline the mind,
and bring thinking into alignment with righteousness and wisdom.
The verse continues:
“…bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
This is often interpreted as spiritual and mental discipline:
resisting fear,
controlling anger,
rejecting deception,
and focusing the mind on what is good and true.
It connects closely with themes of renewal found in Epistle to the Romans 12:2:
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Key Themes:
• Faith and confidence in God
• Spiritual cleansing and renewal
• Purpose before birth
• Mental discipline and spiritual warfare
• Walking faithfully after being called
