Colossians 1:24 (ESV)
“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church.”
What does “filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions” mean?
This verse can sound puzzling because the New Testament clearly teaches that Christ’s sacrificial death was complete and fully sufficient for salvation (see Hebrews 10:10–14).
Most Christian interpreters understand Paul to mean:
Nothing is lacking in Christ’s atoning work. Jesus fully accomplished redemption on the cross.
What is “lacking” is not the saving value of Christ’s suffering, but the ongoing suffering associated with carrying Christ’s message to the world.
Paul, as an apostle, endured persecution, imprisonment, and hardship while serving the church. In that sense, he shared in Christ’s sufferings and bore the hardships necessary to spread the gospel.
Simple paraphrase
Paul is saying:
“I gladly endure suffering for your benefit. As I serve Christ’s church, I experience the kinds of sufferings that come with representing Him in the world.”
Key themes
Joy in suffering for others – Paul sees his hardships as benefiting believers.
Union with Christ – Christians participate in Christ’s sufferings as they follow Him.
Love for the church – Paul’s suffering is “for the sake of his body, that is, the church.”
This verse is not teaching that Christ’s death was insufficient; rather, it highlights Paul’s willingness to share in the sufferings that accompany Christ’s mission to build His church.
