Matthew 6:19–21 and Hexagram 55: Valuing Treasure, Embracing Abundance, and Focusing on the Right Priorities
Matthew 6:19–21 and Hexagram 55 both address prosperity, but they warn that outward abundance is temporary and must be governed by spiritual wisdom.
Matthew 6:19–21: Treasure That Cannot Be Lost
Jesus teaches:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Jesus does not say that owning money or property is automatically sinful. His warning concerns placing our security, identity, and deepest affection in material possessions.
Earthly treasure is vulnerable to:
Decay and deterioration
Theft and economic loss
Changing circumstances
Death, which separates everyone from material ownership
Heavenly treasure includes faithfulness, generosity, mercy, love, obedience, justice, and service to God and others. Such treasure shapes the soul and has lasting spiritual value.
The central question is not merely, “What do you own?” It is, “What owns your heart?”
Hexagram 55: Abundance at Its Peak
Hexagram 55, Feng—Abundance, represents a time of fullness, brilliance, prosperity, visibility, and intense activity. Its traditional image is thunder and lightning coming together—powerful energy illuminating everything at once.
The hexagram teaches that abundance should be:
Used wisely while it is available
Shared rather than selfishly guarded
Managed with clarity and justice
Understood as temporary rather than permanent
When the light is at its brightest, decline may eventually follow. Therefore, abundance should not produce arrogance, distraction, or attachment.
Comparison
Both teachings recognize that material conditions change.
Jesus says earthly treasure may be destroyed or stolen. Hexagram 55 says abundance reaches a high point but cannot remain at its peak forever. Both encourage people to act wisely before circumstances change.
Both also emphasize the proper use of prosperity. Jesus directs wealth toward heavenly purposes. Hexagram 55 calls for responsible leadership, decisive action, and generosity during periods of abundance.
Contrast
Matthew 6 focuses on eternal salvation and the condition of the heart. Its ultimate standard is God’s kingdom.
Hexagram 55 focuses more directly on navigating a temporary season of worldly fullness. Its concern is how to behave wisely when influence, resources, and opportunities are at their height.
Together, they offer a unified lesson:
Enjoy abundance without worshiping it. Use material blessings to produce spiritual good.
What Did Jesus Say About Spiritual Treasure and Material Wealth?
Jesus taught that material wealth is temporary, but spiritual treasure lasts. In Matthew 6, he warns against making possessions the foundation of one’s life.
A few verses later, Jesus declares:
“You cannot serve both God and money.” — Matthew 6:24
The issue is divided loyalty. Money can be a useful servant, but it becomes spiritually dangerous when it becomes a master.
Jesus’ teaching can be summarized this way:
Earn honestly, manage wisely, give generously, and never allow wealth to replace trust in God.
What Generation Will Not Pass Away?
Jesus said:
“Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.” — Matthew 24:34
This statement has several major interpretations.
The generation living in Jesus’ time
Many interpreters believe Jesus was referring primarily to the people living during his earthly ministry. Some of the prophecy was fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by the Romans in AD 70.
The generation that sees the final signs
Others believe Jesus meant that once the final events begin, the generation witnessing them will remain until the events are completed.
“Generation” as a people or spiritual condition
The Greek word genea can refer to a generation, family line, people, or class of people. Some therefore interpret the passage as saying that the Jewish people—or humanity’s rebellious condition—will continue until Christ’s return.
The immediate context strongly connects the statement with the signs Jesus had just described. However, Christians differ over how much of Matthew 24 concerns Jerusalem’s destruction and how much concerns the final return of Christ.
What Color Will We Wear in Heaven?
The Bible does not say that everyone will wear only one color in heaven. However, white garments appear repeatedly as symbols of righteousness, purity, victory, and redemption.
Revelation 7:9 describes a great multitude:
“They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.”
Revelation 7:14 explains that they had washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. This is symbolic language: forgiveness and righteousness come through Christ.
Other heavenly colors also appear:
Gold symbolizes glory, holiness, kingship, and divine value.
Purple can represent royalty and authority.
Blue is often associated with heaven, divine instruction, and faithfulness.
Scarlet or red may represent sacrifice, blood, judgment, or redemption, depending on the passage.
White is the most prominent color associated with the redeemed, but Scripture’s descriptions of heaven contain many brilliant colors, precious stones, and radiant light.
What Does Oil Symbolize Biblically?
Oil carries several related meanings throughout the Bible.
The Holy Spirit
Oil often represents the presence, empowerment, and work of the Holy Spirit. Kings, priests, and sometimes prophets were anointed with oil when appointed for divine service.
David was anointed by Samuel, and “the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David” afterward in 1 Samuel 16:13.
Consecration and appointment
Anointing with oil marked a person or object as dedicated to God. Priests, kings, the tabernacle, and sacred objects were anointed for holy purposes.
Healing and restoration
Oil was used medicinally and symbolically in healing. James 5:14 instructs church elders to pray over the sick and anoint them with oil in the Lord’s name.
Joy and blessing
Psalm 45:7 speaks of the “oil of joy.” Oil could represent celebration, favor, refreshment, and relief from mourning.
Spiritual preparedness
In the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25, the wise virgins carried oil for their lamps. The oil is commonly understood as representing spiritual readiness, sustained faith, or the inward life that cannot be borrowed at the last moment.
Abundance and provision
Oil was also a valuable household commodity. A plentiful supply could symbolize prosperity, God’s provision, and economic security.
Final Reflection
Matthew 6 and Hexagram 55 remind us that prosperity is a responsibility, not merely a reward. Wealth, influence, knowledge, and opportunity all reach their fullest purpose when they serve something greater than personal accumulation.
Earthly abundance may rise and fall, but compassion, integrity, faith, and service create treasure that circumstances cannot destroy.
