Storm Preparedness

Guides And Storm Preparedness

Getting ready for a winter storm can be a real life-saver, quite literally. Start with putting together an emergency kit that has all the basics: water, non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, and some warm blankets. Don’t forget about your car either. Equip it with winter tires, keep some de-icers handy, and always have a snow shovel around.

According to the CDC, dressing correctly for the cold involves layering up. Layers trap warm air, keeping you snug. Skip the booze when it’s freezing out, it can actually make you lose body heat faster. And always be extra cautious with young kids and older folks, they’re more sensitive to the cold.

Now, let’s talk about the four P’s of winter safety. First, People. Make sure you and your community have a safety plan ready. Move on to Pets. They shouldn’t be left outside for too long. Ensure they have a cozy place to stay. Pipes come next. Keep them insulated to avoid them bursting. Lastly, Plants. If you’ve got a garden, protect your plants from frost by covering them or moving them indoors if possible.

A weather preparedness checklist is also super handy to have. Always keep an ear out for any updates from the National Weather Service. Secure anything outdoors that might blow away or get damaged. Stock up on essentials like rock salt or sand for icy spots. And always have a communication plan so you can keep in touch with family and neighbors if things get rough.
