Hexagram 7 is composed of Kan (Water) below and Kun (Earth) above. Its image—water within the earth—suggests a powerful force gathered beneath the surface. Like an army, that force requires organization, direction, perseverance, and capable leadership.

The Judgment reminds us:
“The Army needs perseverance and a strong man. Good fortune without blame.”

My interpretation centers on one essential principle: Discipline.

Like a soldier carrying out a mission, a leader cannot allow personal feelings to interfere with responsibility. Duty comes first. When someone accepts a position of authority, that person must be prepared to lead with commitment, fairness, accountability, and purpose.

The right people must also be placed in the right positions. Leadership should not promote people merely out of convenience or favoritism. A strong organization builds its rank and file on ability, experience, reliability, and merit. Remember: the weakest link can determine the strength of the entire chain.

Yet Hexagram 7 is not simply about strictness. The superior leader understands that discipline must be balanced with generosity, fairness, justice, and appropriate leniency.

The lesson for modern leadership is clear: Leadership is not merely the exercise of authority—it is the responsible organization, education, and guidance of people toward a common purpose.
