Mark 16:2–3, 6 and Hexagram 12

When Obstruction Gives Way to a New Beginning

Mark 16:2–3 describes the women approaching Jesus’ tomb very early in the morning. Although they were faithfully moving toward their destination, they worried about the enormous stone blocking the entrance: “Who shall roll us away the stone?” In verse 6, their concern is answered with an unexpected announcement: “He is risen; he is not here.” (Bible Gateway)

Hexagram 12, commonly translated as Standstill, Stagnation, or Obstruction, describes a period when Heaven and Earth are not communicating. Positive influence appears blocked, relationships become unproductive, and the wise person protects personal integrity rather than wasting energy trying to force progress. (I Ching Online)

Similarities

1. Both begin with an obstruction

The stone represents an obvious physical barrier between the women and the place where Jesus had been laid. Hexagram 12 represents a broader obstruction: communication, cooperation, and constructive energy have stopped flowing.

In both passages, the visible circumstances seem to say, “You cannot go any farther.”

2. Both describe separation

In Mark, death appears to have separated Jesus from his followers. The sealed tomb symbolizes finality, grief, and silence.

In Hexagram 12, Heaven and Earth move apart rather than toward one another. This symbolizes separation between higher principles and earthly affairs, leaders and people, or good intentions and practical results. (YiGram)

3. Both counsel faithfulness during uncertainty

The women did not remain home because they lacked an answer to the stone problem. They continued toward the tomb with the responsibility they had been given.

Likewise, Hexagram 12 teaches that when the surrounding environment is unreceptive, the superior person should preserve inner virtue. One may not be able to control the situation, but one can remain faithful, disciplined, and prepared.

4. The apparent blockage is not necessarily the final reality

The women worried about who would move the stone before discovering that it had already been moved. Their expectations were based on the last condition they had seen—not on what God had done since then. Mark’s account moves from anxiety and death to reassurance and resurrection. (Bible Gateway)

Hexagram 12 also treats stagnation as a condition to be endured wisely, not as permission to surrender one’s character.

Important Differences

Mark proclaims divine intervention

The central message of Mark 16:6 is not merely that circumstances improved. It is that Jesus, who had been crucified, had risen. The obstacle was overcome through an act of God beyond ordinary human ability. (Bible Gateway)

Hexagram 12 does not promise a miracle. It offers practical wisdom for surviving a period when communication and progress are blocked.

Mark encourages approaching the place of fear

The women continued toward the tomb despite their uncertainty. Their faithful movement brought them to the place where the resurrection was announced.

Hexagram 12 generally warns against trying to push aggressively through an unreceptive situation. Its counsel is to withdraw from corruption, preserve one’s principles, and wait for conditions to change.

Mark announces a decisive victory

The empty tomb represents a direct reversal: death does not have the final word.

Hexagram 12 describes a temporary worldly cycle of stagnation. It teaches endurance and self-protection, but it does not contain the distinctly Christian proclamation of resurrection and eternal life.

Spiritual Interpretation

Together, these passages suggest that we must distinguish between faithful movement and forceful striving.

The women moved faithfully toward the tomb, but they did not possess the strength to remove the stone themselves. Hexagram 12 warns against exhausting ourselves by forcing situations that remain closed. Mark reveals another possibility: while we are worrying about the obstacle, God may already be working beyond what we can see.

The spiritual lesson is:

Continue faithfully toward your responsibility, but do not believe that every stone must be moved by your own strength.

During periods of Hexagram 12, protect your integrity, refuse corruption, and avoid desperate action. At the same time, remember the message of Mark 16:6: what appears sealed, silent, and finished may not be the conclusion.

Leadership Reflection

A wise leader facing organizational standstill should not sacrifice principles merely to produce visible activity. Protect the mission, prepare the people, and examine whether the supposed obstacle still exists. Sometimes the team is discussing who will move the stone when the situation has already changed.

Hexagram 12 says: Preserve your character during obstruction.
Mark 16 says: Do not allow yesterday’s obstacle to define today’s possibilities.
