Examining Hexagram 36 and that of Psalm 103

Hexagram 36, often called Darkening of the Light or Injury, and Psalm 103:13–14, 17 both speak to human vulnerability, but they approach suffering from different spiritual perspectives.

Psalm 103:13–14, 17

“Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.”
— Psalm 103:13–14, KJV

Verse 17 continues:

“But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.”

The Psalm acknowledges that human beings are fragile, temporary, and easily wounded. God understands this weakness because He “remembereth that we are dust.” Yet human frailty is contrasted with something permanent: the everlasting mercy of God.

Hexagram 36 — Injury / Darkening of the Light

Hexagram 36 traditionally depicts light entering or being hidden within the earth. The symbolism suggests a period when goodness, intelligence, or truth cannot safely shine openly.

The lesson is not necessarily to defeat darkness immediately. Instead, the wise person may need to protect the inner light, remain faithful to what is right, and avoid unnecessarily exposing oneself to further injury.

In this sense, Hexagram 36 teaches survival through wisdom and restraint. The light has not disappeared; it has temporarily been concealed.

Comparison

Hexagram 36Psalm 103:13–14, 17
Recognizes injury, danger, and vulnerability.Recognizes human weakness and mortality.
Advises protecting one's inner light during difficult circumstances.Assures the vulnerable person of God's compassion.
Darkness may temporarily surround the individual.Human life is temporary, but God's mercy is everlasting.
Perseverance means remaining inwardly faithful even when outward conditions are hostile.Faith rests upon God's enduring mercy and righteousness.
Wisdom may require withdrawal, silence, or restraint.Trust comes from knowing that God understands human weakness.

The important contrast

Hexagram 36 primarily asks:

How should a person conduct himself when the world becomes dangerous or injurious?

Its answer is essentially: Guard the light. Do not allow hostile circumstances to destroy what is true within you.

Psalm 103 asks a different question:

What is God's attitude toward fragile human beings?

Its answer is: Compassion.

God understands that people are made from dust. The Psalm therefore places the final security of the believer not merely in personal endurance, but in God's everlasting mercy.

A deeper spiritual connection

Together they produce a powerful message:

Injury does not mean that the light has been extinguished.

Hexagram 36 says there are seasons when the light must be protected beneath the surface. Psalm 103 explains why we should not lose hope during those seasons: God understands our weakness and responds as a compassionate father toward his children.

The imagery can almost be expressed as:

Hexagram 36:
Protect the light when darkness surrounds you.

Psalm 103:
Remember that God's mercy surrounds you even when your strength fails.

There is also an important relationship between dust and hidden light. Psalm 103 says humanity is dust; Hexagram 36 pictures light concealed within the earth. Both therefore confront humility. We are not always strong enough to overcome every circumstance directly. Sometimes wisdom consists of remaining faithful until conditions change.

Leadership lesson

For leadership, Hexagram 36 warns against displaying every strength, opinion, or strategy when the environment is hostile. A wise leader sometimes preserves the mission quietly rather than fighting every battle.

Psalm 103 adds another dimension: a strong leader should remember the frailty of others. Because people become tired, frightened, injured, or discouraged, leadership should include patience and compassion rather than constant judgment.

The combined principle is:

Protect your own light while showing mercy toward the weakness of others.

Final reflection

Hexagram 36 describes the experience of being wounded. Psalm 103 describes the divine response to the wounded.

One teaches perseverance under darkness; the other teaches confidence in everlasting mercy.

Therefore, when Hexagram 36 appears during a difficult season, Psalm 103:13–14, 17 can serve as a powerful companion:

You may have to conceal your light for a season, but you do not have to surrender it. Human strength is temporary, circumstances change, and according to the Psalm, God's mercy reaches “from everlasting to everlasting.”
